Well done to you for giving the kids the chance to see them in reality.
![]() Some of our reps visit our local school where i work every year and the kids love it .......... often get asked when are your pets coming in again. Not all the staff like the reps but are willing to let the kids see them and hear about looking after them but keep themselves at a distance. ![]()

Hi Penny - I'm intrigued, were the children not allowed to touch the reps because the teachers asked you not to let them?
I go into schools with my snakes and other animals from the wildlife sanctuary where I work and, as long as the children want to, they're allowed to touch them or hold them (apart from the Tarantula!). If it's a big class then I sit on the floor with the younger children and they sit in a big circle around me and I usually say to them "If you like snakes and aren't frightened of them, come and sit close to me, but if you don't like them, then sit at the top of the circle as far away from me as you can get" and there's always a mad dash to get as close to me as possible. We were at 2 schools on Wednesday and the first school the teacher who was 'organising' us, said they had 2 teachers who were terrified of snakes and who didn't want to be involved! Funnily enough I did the nursery class with a hedgehog first (I was sitting on the floor with the children in a big ring around me - there was about 25 of them so they were all quite a distance away from me). I took it out the travel box and was talking to the children about hedgehogs and because I needed 2 free hands to explain something I put him on the floor. Well..........2 little girls screamed (I mean really screamed) and burst into tears and had to be grabbed by 2 of the teachers - he hadn't moved, he just sat where I put him - I've never had that reaction with a snake, even with nursery and playgroup age children.

The school wouldn't let them....i suggested sending a consent form home so that those who wanted to could touch the snakes and the iggy but they wouldn't even do that .........i even explained that if they did want to touch them I would insist that they used anti-bac gel BEFORE touching them as I didnt want my animals to catch anything nasty off he children.....lol

![]() What daft people! It's all part of the education process to actually touch them to see how they feel - so many children think snakes are going to be slimy. All the children who come to our sanctuary on their school trips handle every animal they get the chance to. We provide bowls of water and towels and insist they wash their hands after every handling session and before they leave. What a shame they were such killjoys! Still at least you managed to get the reps into the classroom! Who knows if you persevere, you might manage to get the teachers to agree to the children handling.
