I study animal conservation science in Cumbria university, but i organised a placement myself in the Gambia, one week last september, one week over easter, then 4-6 weeks over the summer. Last month we worked on the re-introduction of Armitage skinks (Chalcides armitagei) into the wild, a very rare lizard. I got to release a young specimen which was very exciting. I was also taught how to catch and handle venomous and potentially dangerous snakes safely.
In the summer we will be undertaking surveys into the status of the native crocodiles in the gambia, to determine the distribution and presence of the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) West african crocodile (Crocodylus suchus) and the dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis). We will also be assessing possible suitable habitats for the re-introduction of the slender snouted crocodile (Mecistop [formerly Crocodylus] cataphractus) and dwarf crocodile. We may also undertake some research into the distribution of a newly discovered resident of the gambia, Naja katiensis. All very exciting!

The projects sound very interesting...it's nice to see some reptilian conservation in action as it usually doesnt get highlighted as much in Africa as the mammalian work..
Is this your research or are you volunteering with these projects? i.e are they organised by the organistation that you were at in the Gambia? Im just wonder ing to see if anyone can join... If you have any more info that you could Pm that'd be great... cheers, Rob |
