Thanks again everyone. He's been in hiding today apparently.

I'm looking at getting one of THESE temp and humidity probe things from Maplins, do you think it will be ok or would you advise something else?

The thing at the back is the thermostat probe, it is touching the floor on the heatmat side (but I have been a bit worried about the snake moving it or something) would it work the same if I wedged it inbetween the heat mat and the bottom of the tank, I would have thought that the reading it gets there would be a lot higher than the actual temp on the tank floor? It would be handy if it can go there as it would also make the set up more eye pleasing and wire free and I wouldn't have to worry about it everytime I take the lid off. I will have to think about resealing the hole I made though. Sorry about all the questions but also, would it be ok to put a couple of elastic bands around the tank just to ensure the lid doesn't come off and the flaps on the lid aren't pushed open(more for my wifes peace of mind).

Thanks for taking the time to look and all your comments and help

I'll sort out some black paper to stick on the back and a side, don't want him stressing out already. I'll also see about getting him another hide or 2, although it seems his favourite place at the moment is sitting on top of the bark.

This will probably be my first and only Royal, it took me about 3 years to persuade the wife to get this one
My missus agreed to let me start keeping again, got our first Amarula, now we have 7, . She loves them!

The 6 year old is my daughter, she named the snake.

Our 2 cats are very wary of the new arrival So they are keeping their distance and are a little bit jumpy, serves them right for teasing the fish for the past few months.

Still got a bit more shopping to do for them, more hides, a humidity gauge and something for the temp (thermometers in viv or infrared type).

I'm leaving him to do his own thing this week while he gets settled then its feeding time Sat / Sun and next week I'll see how he is with handling, as long as feeding goes ok.

Lovely snake. I'm a noob too, so not much advice from me. Mine didn't feed for a few weeks but eventually took a rat at the weekend with no problems. As many hides and cover as possible worked for me.
