Thanks everyone, this looks like a great forum to be a part of, I think I'm going to enjoy visiting regularly. And to all those with new snakes I hope you're enjoying it as much as me.

The only thing I can think of is to stick the thermostat censor to the heat mat, and to check the temperature in the hot end of the tub using a thermometer. just to get more accurate temperature control.
very nice royal!!!!

I take it that the temp probe for the stat will work and with only the side touching the heat mat then? At the moment I have the tip of the probe on the heat mat, like you would if you were writing on it with a pen.

Also anyone got any ideas on what I could do to seal the hole that I made to squeeze the probe in? I know snakes are notoriously good escape artisits. The hole is only the diameter of the probe so its not a massive hole.

Thanks

If it's the diameter of the probe then a Royal won't be able to squeeze out of that one!

Yes the side of the probe will work fine, and stick it to the heat mat. and with either a digital thermometer or a cheap thermometer strip. just put that on the inside of the tub over the heat mat. just to get the temp to a more accurate temperature reading and you've got more control over the stat and heat mat, you'll be after a temp of about 85 ish up to 90. once your got the temperature reading of about that just mark on the stat knob. where that temperature is, it's never been what the stat say's it should be. even it you do have the stat probe in the tub.

I hope that helps.

Have you had him feeding yet????
