Talking Beginner to snakes - My baby Royal

Here is my new Male Royal and the set up I have for him. If anyone can see any potential problems please let me know as this is my first day as a snake owner and I'm trying to learn all I need to know

Firstly say hello to Rockie (my 6 year old little girl named 'our' snake)

Bath time

My set up

(You can just see the heatmat and thermostat thing in the top left)

Thanks for looking and I look forward to hearing your comments. Please don't hold back as I would hate to be doing anything wrong. (I do have a stat attached to the heatmat)

Beautiful new royal, congrats Il try and give him a bit more cover though if possible, make him feel real safe. Might also be worth covering a couple of the sides of the tub with some backing, will help him feel safe. Worked wonders with my little one who had been refusing to feed, now on his 2nd consecutive strike feed and doing much better

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to watching him grow and can't wait until I give him his first feed at the weekend. The shop I got him from have already got him strike feeding so it should be fun.

I'll sort out some black paper to stick on the back and a side, don't want him stressing out already. I'll also see about getting him another hide or 2, although it seems his favourite place at the moment is sitting on top of the bark.

This will probably be my first and only Royal, it took me about 3 years to persuade the wife to get this one

Congrats on the new snake. I'll bet it's not long till you get another one - it's very addictive you know...!

I would advise you to get yourself a couple of thermometers - one for the hot end and one for the cold end - as the temp on the thermostats isn't always accurate. Once you get accurate readings from thermometers you know how to set the thermostat during the day and night.

Also, couldn't really see very well in the pic but it looks like you have the thermostat probe hanging in from the top of the faunarium. You can make it easier by sticking the probe directly on the mat underneath the tub. Either way, make sure the probe is directly on the floor as this is where the snake is and not dangling mid air.

Hope you really enjoy your new snake. Leave him alone now for the week - I know it's tempting to keep picking them up and having a look - and he will hopefully feed for you at the weekend.

Then you can start planning your next snake.
