Definitely not candycane - he's got orange/yellow background instead of white.

I'd third the idea that it's an Amel hybrid ratsnake of some description, either Creamsicle (amelanistic cornXgreat plains rat hybrid) or a "bubblegum rat" (cornXobsoleta rat).

creamsicle

mates got creamsicle hatchlings,practically identical.
Thus would explain the slight difference in the head as creamsicles are cross rat at some point.

Is there anything I could use as a definite guide?

This was sold at a shop as a Candy Cane, so the shop is CLEARLY misleading customers!

Well, by definition, a Candy Cane is an amel with a clean WHITE background and coloured saddles. If it has an orange background, it doesn't have a white one, which means it can't be a candycane. Now, it is quite a pale amel and there's evidence that some (many? most?) candy canes have some Creamsicle heritage because creams tend to have a paler/whiter background.

Candy cane is an amel. Just like sunglow, reverse okeetee etc. the labelling is subjective. What counts as a candy cane to one breeder may not to another. Shops generally label snakes as they receive them to be honest, and genetically - it is still an amel. If someone was looking for a true candycane and actually cared for a selective breeding project, surely they would know what they were looking for and what they wanted?

It is like labelling things as miami, carolina, okeetee - they are still normals, peoples perception of exactly what this locality looks like can be very different from each other - and you get good examples, and bad examples - genetically, still all normals.

Is it in shed?

My amel was labelled "Candy Cane" when I bought him. He clearly isn't. The label meant nothing to me at the time, he was a nice looking corn so I bought him.

I have seen many amels labelled "Candy Cane" since in various shops, which are in fact ordinary amels. It is easy for shop owners to add the Candy cane tag to any amel with orange saddles and a pale background, even if the background colour is orange. I suspect they just don't really know rather than trying to mislead customers.

It doesn't really affect me, but I'm still glad I have the little one... even if I don't know what to label him as!
