i don't believe there has ever been a 30 foot rock! a 20 foot afrock could live quite happily in an 8 x 4! do you have any experience with large booids or are you just basing that on sensationalist reports? you can't seriously believe that a 200 pound snake wants to have a wander about for a bit of exercise or feels upset when it can't. all they will do in the wild is sit in a burrow of some kind, waiting for an impala to walk past, eat it then lie there some more! thats pretty much what we provide them with in captivity in suitable viv and a good meal every 4 to 6 weeks! scare mongering really does nothing for how these large snakes are kept when fully grown! giving a dangerous snake massive room in which to menouvre is a recipe for disaster trust me!
i have a baby african rock who is as tame as both of my corns. the key with large snakes with bad reputations is gentle handling but at the same time showing them who's boss ie. trying to get them out even when they are striking or they will learn that aggressiveness makes you leave them alone!
all my experiences with rocks and anaconda's have been the opposite of what people will usually make out on here, apart from wild caught individuals i have seen in shops!
there are risks involved with them as there are with burms but a young snake in the hands of a responsible owner will usually result in a placid adult!

i wouldnt really say that the size of the viv being small is really a bad conditon or good condition i would say it is really more of adequite or inadiquite housing. i would have thought of bad conditions like whats inside the viv such as is it the correct temps or the correct substrate etc.

Rocks will roam several hundred meters easily when looking for food in the wild.Other times like you say an antelope will walk straight by.It would be interesting if anyone has any data on muscle tone with regards to captive/wild.

but they won't move if an impala walks past which, again, is what we provide them with
another point is that anyone who keeps a large snake should have it out for handling at least twice a week to keep it tame so that should be exercise enough!
another interesting point is that snakes can move with an energy expenditure of 3 calories a second so any exercise won't do much anyway!
so again, an 8 x 4 is fine for all but the largest of afrocks
