my parents would never let me have reps as a child. now they shake there heads at my "ridiculous menagerie". NOW between the torts and snakes and lizards and kids i live in a mad house. My parents tried to woo me away from reptiles (after all, people that like reptiles are all evil deviants!) by buying me a horse, sending me to france on holiday every summer to learn new sports and getting me a music tutor to learn clarinet and saxophone.

They even persuaded me to read english at uni instead of doing a Bsc in animal management. But now i am gonna go back to college and do what i always wanted so sod them. They paid for a crappy and mediocre 2:1 that i am never gonna use.

AS everybody else has said, sometimes the parents just wont give in. But imagine the pleasure of having your own flat one day and being able to fill it with whatever you want! you will be able to utilise all the knowledge you have gained from reading up about it all and thenthey wills ee that you were right all along. good luck and dont lose heart!

I got my own place. Mum is terrified of snakes. No convincing. Moved out, now have two and want more.

You can't always win unfortunately.

I asked every day for about 3 years, moving it up to several times a day near the end. Eventually my mum said no and my dad turned round and said "Just let him bloody have one he'll be 16 soon". I got my first snake for my 16th birthday. In the meantime I was reading up all that I could, leaving books around the house etc. so they knew I was reading up on them

Sorry to hear that.

You and Lorcan could set up some sort of support group for those affected by non budging parents......

But everyone has given you great advice so far and I haven't much to add.

Respect your parents house and don't go behind their backs, it will gain you more respect in the long run, reasearch reasearch and more reasearch in the mean time, and get them to actually meet a nice tame snake and see if they melt. Esspecially when a gorgeous royal gives them those puppy dog eyes....

I agree that spending your time researching will be time well spent.

But i also think that you should try to get your parents or maybe just one of them in a position whee they can see that snakes are not scary, horrible, slimy monsters that will eat the cat!!

Try a reputable specialist reptile shop or something similar where they can see first hand that a lot of what your hear about snakes are misconceptions.

Try to lead them to the smaller more colourful snakes, the ones that look the least threatening.

You could always try finding somone near you with reps who would let you come and handle them and let you get used to them. With your parents permission. then when they see how much research and confidence you have with the, they may swing round. Plus you get to see loads of great reps.
