i know a couple of people who have been bitten on several occasions and shrugged it off like a bee sting. could have been a dry bite though, or just not given much venom. think the last fatality and possibly only one in modern times was about 1974.

An Adder bite is only considered dangerous to young children elderly or unfit people and small dogs. As far as i am aware it is consider ILLEGAL to obtain ANY reptile native to the UK directly from the wild and is infact illegal to molest them in any way due to their delicate natural terrain mapping even moving them supstantial distance would probably lead to death.

Adders are only protected from being killed or injured. They can be taken from the wild, obviously subject to the correct DWAL being held, but it is illegal to sell, trade or give them away. The only native herps protected as you describe are the Smooth Snake, the Natterjack Toad and the Great Crested Newt

That told me

Either way I would still consider that disturbing or moving these snakes is highly distressing and espescially in the young will usually lead to death...but of course because somebody holds a DWAL they would know this

Is there any particular reason you would like a Vipera berus? If it's for venomous, there are other, captive-bred species which are not considered lethally dangerous (not that the adder is).

I am not sure how much breeding has been done with European viper species, but I expect the Germans and Dutch have done a bit, and maybe the Spanish as they have 3 species on the peninsula.
