Well technically you are both right AND wrong.

ALL venoms are poisons.

though I'm just splitting hairs here cos I'm bored

Hmmm, conundrum. All venoms and poisons are a form of toxin, but the definition lies in how the toxin is delivered, or else we'd just say everything is toxic. So a venomous animal delivers venom by injection and a poisonous plant or animal, poisons you via ingestion. Theres only one animal that blurs these boundaries and thats a slow loris, a mammal a bit like a sloth, it secretes poison from glands on the inside of its elbows, with which it covers its young to prevent it being eaten, but by licking the patches and biting, it delivers a venomous bite. Clever animal eh? God bless the Discovery Channel!

*sigh* i remember the hassle i caused when i stopped a toad being squished in the amphibians section and brought it back to my house.

However its true that adders do need a DWA license, although most adults can shrug off the bites.

Dangerous Wild Animal License. I.e. Front fanged snakes, or rarely certain breed rear fanged.

I know this is a thread mainly about adders but i read in another thread that you are allowed to catch a grass snake if you are keeping it for your own collection you are just not allowed to sell it but if you bred them you are allowed to sell the 3rd generation of babys as long as you can prove thay have been captive bred by you

correct me if i am wrong

As said they are covered by DWAL laws so a licence is needed. i have had them in as rescues from various places, merely had them for a few days until finding a suitable release spot. i find them quite docile whilst on a hook, pretty things too.

Although i must say that having actually been bitten by one i can assure you it was most unpleasant and stopped me walking for about 4 days with pronounced swelling and bruising all around my right calf thus proving the spike milligan theory 'there's nothing madder than a trodden on adder'.

thats the last time i jump in a bush trying to catch a yellow belly toad.

here's a pic or 3 of the last gravid female we had in...........

Your're allowed to sell 1st generation offspring.

Sand Lizards have the same protection as well. Not quite sure what the score is with the reintroduced pool frogs yet though.

In both instances.... are you sure thats still the same since the european protected species legislation came into effect? i'd like to see evidence of that if i may. interesting if its still the case.
