I think that, wherever you are in the world, you should preserve your native wildlife. We import things in huge numbers, i hope the folks in their respective countries do their bit for the native wildlife...
I do quite alot of conservation work for herps, particularly in Dorset, and must admit i hate all these threads with 'lets get some grass snakes etc and breed them for conservation purposes' etc. I don't believe that's the intention for a minute to be honest, real conservation involves keeping their habitats safe - the best place for them. And just to add a further twist, i keep reading about people wanting to breed slow worms to put genuine captive bred stock into the UK trade. Nice intention, but the reality is that people will see something to make a small buck from and anguis will just get exploited further, with many WC specimens being offered on classifieds etc....And that will NOT be good for the UK's slow worm population. Anyone ever thought about trying to give something back to reptiles etc? It all seems to be take, take, take. For all that is imported, we should all be trying to conserve our native species. I don't expect people from the UK to go out to south America and preserve dendrobates etc, although that would be great, it should be done by the local people, just as we have a duty to preserve our own. It'd be nice, just for once, to see a thread where someone actually asked for information about where they could get involved in the conservation of reptiles and amphibians native to this relatively small island, but sadly i can't see it happening.... ![]()

Yes because im blatantly wanting nothing more than to make a quick buck.
![]() I would genuinely like to be involved in conservation but as always i have found groups to be a little too political and up their own backside for my liking. The last thing i want is some organisation looking down to me because i decided to work on my own rather than working with them because they are the authority on such things. |

Hun, If you wana breed some and release some then do it, there are people who think your doing a nice thing to help, and people that dont. Cant please everyone, so please yourself, most know your not trying to make money of of them, i think a project like thsi would be difficult to be honest, and prob too much hard work for money grabbers.

Which groups are a 'little too political and up their own backside'?. I don't think you've been involved with any herpetological conservationists. The folks i go out with in Dorset, who are basically BHS/HCT, are a good bunch and it's a good day out, working hard clearing scrub whilst having a good laugh etc. I highly doubt you've ever been out on a task with any of us, so don't make up bu11sh1t please - we're neither political nor up our own backside. You might actually find there's some good people out there before you make such a sweeping statement.
