It's fine done in a group, or on your own. I certainly haven't said otherwise, and certainly haven't said you can only be involved in a group. Every little helps : )

Hi,

I can see all points raised but the one thing i would like to know lucifus is do you actually know what you are doing? these animals are coming out of hibernation and shouldn’t really be interupted. The spring induces sexual cycling but if a female is put under stress because some conditions are not correct (or even if they are) in her new captive environment she may not cycle properly possibly not releasing her pheromones needed for the males spermiogenisis to commence thus leaving the whole exercise flawed.

Im not an expert on the breeding cycle of our native reptiles so I hope if i have these event wrong some one will put me right i do however know that it is always a critical point in any population especially seasonal breeders like these. Stress of capture and acclimatizing to captivity could do more harm than good unless you really know what you are doing.

As an alternative why dont you set aside some good habitat for them. I see many adders, slow worms, and grass snakes killed on the roads down here, if I manage to catch one in the road (which gets very busy in the summer) i will take it as far away as i can to a suitable habitat. I see no problem with this (but i also think there should be a cull on cats, shhhh!) but i wouldnt keep one as i simply respect their wild status to much. Im pretty sure adders and grass snakes make tricky captives cant imagine slow worms would as hard. I would advice against your plans. Just get a camera and take awesome pics, study them, you never know you may find a nest and be able to see something amazing in the wild.

One further not; im sure you need a permit for this.

If you really want to help the local grass snake population leave them well alone, and work on improving habitat.Even if you did have success breeding do you have any idea of the snake population in your local area.Have you surveyed you release sites?have you any release sites? It is not a matter of releasing juvenile snakes into the wild. You are more likely to simply over populate an area. This will simply cause the death of either the snakes you release/wild snakes or more likely a number of both. Also if you keep snakes already there is a good chance of spreading disease between the groups. You really do not want to release a disease into a wild population this could be catastrophic! There are so many factors to take into consideration with regards to reintroduction programs firstly is it needed from whats been said I do not believe you have the data to know.
I understand you want to help but you would be much better help joining your local ARG group or helping out at your local nature reserve.

I think at this point it'd be wise for someone to point out that breeding them and releasing the offspring in the wild is not legal as far as I know.

As has been pointed out the way to help our native species is to leave them where thye are and work on improving, securing and clearing habitat.

GRS made a ver good point. If a desease broke out withing wild populations the damage could be devistating ie hundreds of animals would die.

Lucufus if you really know what your doing then best of luck to you i just sinceirly hope you do.

i used to catch things and let them go after keeping them a while. i had two female copperheads that both had babies... i let them all go. mostly in spots where i had never seen them before, hoping to help re-establish them. i had a ton of babies. it sucks how snakes there are so rare.
