Default My wild snake trap idea.

Ok thought of this, Compost inside a brewing tub with a hole cut out of the bottom side, however create some kind of slot down system for when i return.

Inside i will hopefully put some sort of bait (unsure what yet) and camo it up so others don't find it (although put a warning to replace it if anyone does find it), and leave it in the woods near a stream for a few days.

When i return i will cover the slot back up and take it back home undo the lid and start removing the compost to search for wild snakes/slow worms. Obviously i will remove the lid with a long stick and not actually put my hand inside the tub just in case i inadvertently catch an adder and get tagged.

Basically im looking for grass snakes and/or slow worms but they can be hard to locate due to their shyness. If i do catch an adder it will be hooked into a secondary tub and released back into the wild.

What do you guys think?

I think a fox is more likely to dig it up than a snake would be.

A fox would smell what ever you put in there with no holes at all.

No harm in trying though - let me know how you get on.

Sheet of corrugated metal laid flat on the ground - you'll find them there within the week (as long as they're in the area of course!)

Barry is most likely to have them, i know another are down the road (Rhoose) that has a large population of them, however its the only place i know that actually has warning signs up in certain places warning that adders in the area and not to enter during the warm seasons.

I know the perfect place to find them, large stream with a woodland area, normally populated by frogs/toads.

I agree- if they are born in the wild, they should stay in the wild

I'm fairly sure it's illegal to do so anyway!

I dont think you can buy grass snakes or slow woms, its illegal to sell them. If your so against it, how come you have reptiles in the first place, their ansestors came from the wild at one point ya know.
