Default Milksnakes/Corns >> best choice for noob?

Hey guys,

I have been researching reptiles and snakes etc and i must admit snakes are really fantastic creatures...

I particularly love the milk snakes the red/white coloured ones just because they look amazing but corn snakes also look fantastic.

I'm after something that roughly fits this profile:

High handability/Tamability - i want to be able to have it just wrapped around my arm or wherever it feels comfortable without constant bites etc.

Relitively cheap - I have a budget this month of £150 - £200 at a stretch i have no idea whether thats possible if not i'll just wait till next month but still..

Something perhaps that doesn't grow enormous/need a massive viv

Can i just ask aswell i've heard of people keeping there snakes in a RUB box do you need any UV lighting/Heat mats with snakes as ones i've seen are plastic so i would have thought could melt? lol.

And lastly do you need of those hooks to get the snake out of the viv or can you just pick them out by hand? another way of asking this is do you really need all the tools i see online? lol

in my opioion low end morph corns are great for this

corns are one of the cheaper snakes - especially the more common varieties

either

make sure you buy a thermostat - whatever the shop says and put the sensor on the heat mat itself - then no probs - and no they don't need uv

And lastly do you need of those hooks to get the snake out of the viv or can you just pick them out by hand? another way of asking this is do you really need all the tools i see online? lol
a couple of my guys like to pretend they are horrible but even with those i find a pen works fine to put near the head end while picking them up.

If you see the shop, breeder pick it up and handle it ok and, once the snake has settled in, you handle it regularly you shouldn't have any problems.

hope you have fun!

Both corn and milks are great first snakes with your the money you have to spend you should be able to get a corn and a viv just take a look in the classifieds ads as for the hooks and tools thay are mainly for aggressive snakes

Hi, you should get a snake that you really want. All the ones you have said you like, would be suitable for you.

If you want to keep one in a RUB, you will need a heat mat to cover 1/3 of the tub, a stat to control the temps, hides for cool and warm ends (these can be toilet roll holders if small snake) a water bowl and some substrate (newspaper, kitchen roll or Aspen, Aubiose and many others). The RUB's don't melt as they are not that hot (26-31c) but you do need ventilation holes.

I would think on your budget, you could buy a young Corn or milk and set it up. You then have time to save for a viv for when it is bigger.

No you shouldn't need a hook.

Good luck

I'd say a corn, they're generally cheaper, especially if you go for a lower end morph, you can get classic hatchlings for £20 these days.
Personally I find them better to handle too, I don't actually OWN a milksnake but I've handled a fair few and have always been musked or pooed on and it wasn't pretty, plus they were pretty hard to handle, flipping about all over the place.

Corns are just great for handling, I can sit at the computer with one of my corns wrapped around my arm for ages, and mine are reeeeally, really inquisitive, they always want to know what is going on.

But as said before the snake that is best for you is the snake that YOU want, as long as you do all your research and stuff beforehand.

Just to add what GRAKKY was saying, Milks are no different than corns to handle in my oppinion, ive kept both and yes while they are young they can be skitterish to handle but that goes for the both of them! Milks and Kings are known to musk if they feel threatened but thats not to say it will happen if you get one. Ive had my Milk now for 3 years and can honestly say ive never been musked on or striked at by him.

I don't have a preference over the two to be honest, i think they're both amazing creatures and if i had room/money i would buy them both!

For me its more about which i should get first

But this will be the diffinitive snake the one that will base my opinions on snake owning for the future

thanks for all the advise everyone

You should get the snake that you really want. Thats one thing i've learned from all snake keeping websites and guidelines.

Personally I would get a milksnake but thats only because I love them and thats the snake I will be picking up next month.

I just like the colours of a milk snake they are so bright and vivid.

And again going by what I have researched on the t'internet you wouldnt neeed the tools to pick the snake up

I agree with faroopnorth although i do prefer corns and thats cause i have 2 and dont have a milksnake, they both have their pros and cons but it is down to which you prefer and which is best suited to you! with your budget you could get either!
