i'm sure nige in aware of the dangers of breeding small. Ourr 300G female was 180G after laying I think! It takes it out of them thats for sure.

It seems crazy talking like this, our female tiger who I consider to be breeding ssize is 13.9KG after cooling different worlds, same hobby.

This is what I was having a go at Nige... not your practices but the fact that you state that the advice that is generally given ( Including by Paul ) is wrong.

I know as many long term breeders as you do dude and I also know just as many rescues and shops who have to deal with the consequences of people heeding opinions like you have given. Have you ever considered that there may be a reason that other breeders do not come on and state this stuff ?

As a long time breeder, you must be fully aware of the toll producing and laying eggs takes on a female rat snake with regard to condition and weight after she has laid her eggs. My radiated rat snake for example, double clutched this year... thankfully, I had 6 weeks or so to feed her up between clutches... but by the time she had finished, she looked like she had starved for 3 months or so and barely had the energy to eat. Just imagine what state she would have been in if she did not have the weight and bulk before she started. I could have lost her.

The fact is Nigel, this forum is frequented by complete snake keeping novices and especially snake breeding novices. You only have to look at the number of threads asking what snake to buy and my snake is gravid.. what do I do now ?

For a moderator to be stating that weight, size and maturity is not important when it comes to breeding snakes is not on, no matter what the circumstances... unless of course you are volunteering to pick up the pieces when people follow this advice and things go wrong.
i didnt say it wasnt important, i was saying more along the lines it being ironic thats its a 600g corn... i certainly wasnt condonign under age breeding like you say.. you probably need to have a read of the whole lot steve, i'm guessing you have missed quite a few relavent things in this.
i'm basically saying the rule of 3 isnt the be all and end all.. its just a guide, most snakes between 200-300 grams will be ok, i'm not saying to go out and do it, but i saying if it happens not to panic as most females get thru it..
i know about the double clutching etc, but like with the female, any snake can just drop dead.. 3ft 3 years, 300 grams.. or 600 grams 3 years and 5ft, or 2 years, under 3ft and maybe 250 grams.. as long as the snake is healthy and strong then there wont be a problem in almost all circumstances...

have a look at a few others of the 45 posts.. many of them will then make a lot more sence mate..
seriously, i dont wanna mislead people, maybe thats what i have done, but you are the only one to have actually said anything.
people will need to read a lot more than just the 1st post in order to find the info they need.. i wont breed anything myself under 2 years or 250 grams. as long as the snake is strong and healthy and the male isnt massive, then there shouldnt be issues.
