Hi,

With regards to the humidity, I have just aquired a BRB and set up, the humidity is no prob as its a plastic viv, so I think you may have to dig deep and get one. Keep an eye out on ebay as they sometimes crop up there. How big is your snake?

About orchid bark, it is actually bark from the Douglas fir pine, think its treated in a certain way though not sure, and available from loads of places, this link should help you:

Orchid bark

We keep all our snakes on orchid bark and have no problems other than it can be expensive when you get to using it in very large vivs!

This is a link to plastic viv but not sure how big you need it....

Pennine Polythene Vivarium £48.99 - Pet Zoo Online Reptile Shop & Exotic Pet Store

this comes in 24" and 36" and is what my little snake is housed in currently.

I think this is probably one of the cheapest plastic vivs and is good if you know that your snake is eventually gonna grow out of it.

We have some of our snakes in herptek vivs but these are very expensive so we will not be buying one for the BRB just yet!

Good luck with your search for a better humidity!

Lorraine

Hi Lorraine

Have to say, I had a BRB several years ago which I kept in a Penine viv - personally I HATE them and would never use them again! I found it didn't just keep it humid, it actually ended up with water running down the sides, the substrate went mouldy almost overnight, and it smelled funny. I would never buy one of these again....but that's just me!

My BRB is about 4ft long but very slender. Personally I can see no reason at all why the viv I have is not holding the humidity, I have also spoken to a couple of rep suppliers in the area (ie about an hour away!) who can't see any reason for it either, and I have described my set up in detail. C'est la vie....

Re the orchid bark, thank you - but it's typical, I've now put the search term into Google and tons of sites are coming up where there were none before. D'oh!!!!!! Only thing is I need to find somewhere in my area which sells it (I'm in Yeovil) or I'll be paying huge amounts for delivery as I expect it's heavy...

Anyone know anywhere in Yeovil/Taunton which sells it???? Am willing to travel to Bristol or Exeter as well.

thanks all!

Hi ,

I didn't buy the pennine viv personally, it came with the snake as a complete set-up. I have ONLY ever chosen to buy herptek vivs which is again the way I will go with this snake when it's big enough. I have a carpet python in the large aborreal herptek viv (90cmx60cmx100cm) which I think will be perfect for the BRB eventually but at £326 is not cheap!

I have drilled some holes in this pennine viv, and think I will be drilling more still as I don't think it provides enough ventilation which would obviously cause the problems of too much humidity and mould. Those little round vents on the back wall are way inadequate for the job!

The herptek vivs come well ventilated and allow you to cover what you need to create the appropriate humidity. We keep our GTP in one and have some vents covered to keep him correctly.

I was only suggesting it as a possible answer to your problem as they are very cheap compared to herptek, rhino etc.
I was unaware you had already been down that route before.

Still hope you find an answer to your problem.....

Lorraine

Temps: Around 88F hot end, 80F cool end. Temps dropped about 5F at night.

I would also reduce the temps a touch, this will really help your humidity and they are a touch high.

I would aim for 84-86 hot spot, 80F ambient and 78 cold end. Or there abouts.

Even a drop of a couple of degrees will improve the humidity.

Hi Lorraine, I hope you didn't think I was being "funny", I certainly didn't mean it to come across that way, so apologies if you thought I was! Difficult when reading sometimes to see the "tone" of how people say things. And I know what you mean about the vents (or definite lack of) in the Penine, I think that was the problem I experienced. I'm just personally not a fan....

Cheers Crownan, will definitely do that - I have to say that I have noticed the humidity is better when the temps drop slightly to their "night" setting.

Thanks all!

That ok, I know it can be hard sometimes to read how people are intending what they say to be taken!

I was only trying to help, I agree that I would personally not buy a pennine viv, the plastic is no where near as high quality as the herptek, positively thin in comparision. The herpteks are also designed to stack which is very helpful when you have a collection.
I am gonna add a few vents and try to improve what I have so I don't need to buy another viv in the mean time.

The temps recommended by Crownan are what I was told when I bought the BRB so can def agree with that!

Good luck

Lorraine

with reguards to the plastic viv, you dont need the whole viv to be humid, which i why i put in a humid hide, so that it didnt get overly humid in the viv its self.

Hi jen

Glad your BRB went to a good home!!

Re your comment above, my viv (although not plastic) is not holding the humidity very well for whatever bizarre reason, so I've been providing moss hides, but these don't seem to have helped, as her shed was pants. *sigh* I'm trying to get it sorted so hopefully next time she sheds it will be OK

yeah just shove in a nice damp moss filled tub, i placed mine in the middle of the viv at the back, so it wasnt too hot or too cold, this should do the trick. It doesnt matter this time if its come off in bits, so long as its all off, and hopefully nest time with the tub in he/she will use it.

When i first got bosh my bci he was a tiny hatchling corn snake size, and was almost black, he had so many sheds on him. I had to keep him in a damp tub on a heatmatt on and off for ages!!! but the sheds finally came off.

Ive never used a moss tub for my BRBs and they shed great. If your viv is running good humidities and moss box is not necessary

How often do you spray the viv?
