as far as i am concerned, there is no debate as such no..

at the end of the day, i have been doing this for the last 8 months, and speak from experience gained by actually DOING it not just thinking about it..

by the time you remember that you have to drive from where you live, to the collection, to the drop and then home again..

i made teesside to leeds 67 miles btw.. tho of course did not have postcodes to work from...

for me, that 67 miles.. would actually have come to 320 miles by the time i had done the trip..

now... my real running costs.. as in what i know the car drinks.. is around £15 for 60 miles at the moment..

that means, that just to cover my fuel, will cost about £80.

then you need to take into account wear and tear, insurance and so on.

and then you need to think about charging something for your time too.. that trip will take almost a full working day 7-8 hours... how much does a courier earn a day.. well minimum wage say, thats about 5.25 an hour now?

so 5.25 X say 7 hours = £driver salary of 36.75 for the day.. and lets face it, that amount is pitiful for what has to be done..

so.. regardless of what your link says, or does not say.. i know that the "60 mile" trip you talk about.. would cost me, in reality.. about £80 and 8 hours out of my life...

and you wonder why we don't do it for peanuts???????

i have to say, if someone said to me, as you have, that it would be cheaper to hire a car and do it themselves... i would answer "be my guest" *grins*

thats not a dig at you as such, just... its NOT as simple as you and rob like to think, and having spent the last year doing such trips on and off, all i will say, is try it yourself... you will soon see what i am getting at

The actual cost of running a vehicle is not really that high.
At the price you have quoted, a vehicle is making on average a 100% mark up on relative cost to charge.
It differs for petrol and for diesel, yet they are overall somewhat similar.

Diesel Running Costs:

https://aadrivingschool.co.uk/allabo...esel_table.jsp

Petrol Running Costs:

https://aadrivingschool.co.uk/allabo...trol_table.jsp

...and these costings are at todays costs, and do include fuel usage, and every possible expenditure that the journey of the vehicle incurs.

Therefore your statement of finding it difficult to maintain a profit on the prices charged today, even at 40pence per mile, or there abouts, is wrong i'm afraid.

I understand whats being said but say your at the north of scotland and want something either from borders or north of england or south of scotland rt etc would be a fortune, but anything based up this way would be cheaper. simply because you havent got the travel from whereever the company is based to factor in.
my car can take me to the far reaches of scotland on what seems like pennies considering the cost of fuel etc atm.
i'm part of a ferret network to ferry rescues to places that can home them, its a voluntry service but sometimes its a straight journey or a stage drop to take them to another driver. so i know what that sort of thing entails, i just never thought of starting something like that myself.
i've never used rt etc but i can understand where some prices come from but others seem nuts when a more local service would be cheaper and less stress for the driver cos the distance would be smaller all in.

Oops, by not wanting a debate i meant it as in from that point, didn't want you to take what i had said as a slate or a dig. I was stating very simple and very straight forward, and proven fact, no room for negotiation on proven fact i'm afraid.
Your costs are wrong Nery's, plain and simple.
It does not cast you £80 for fuel, let alone the wear and tear.
A 320 mile trip costs on average (an average taken from the diesel to petrol costs) a grand total of £64.00
Add time onto that equation and i cannot quote, i aint there when you drive.
The £64 / 320 miles comes in at £0.20 / mile total costings. Various factors will change that from mile to mile but not quite so much as to increase the costings by 20%, which an increase up to £80 would be just that.
A business or costing re-evaluation may be required, i don't know. But quite simply, what you are saying does not add up i'm afraid. You cannot argue with the figures when i provided them for you for you to check yourself.

i would say if you can drive, have a car or can hire one, and have the time then pick up yourself. or if you know anyone going to say cpr, get them to pick up what you are after while they are there. i think you would br able to pay for the rep with your card over the phone.
plus there are couriers, but with them you dont know whats going on really, and if they are twenty mins late you would be climbing the walls. and they are not really rep wise are they. they wont provide heat etc for your rep.
