He bluffs like mad but once you pick him up he immediately stops,

Males tend to be fairly small with a small mouth, so there pretty limited as to where they can catch you bearing in mind that there rear fanged, and then take into account you've got to let them chew any toxins into you.

The risks are fairly small of any serious incident occuring with a hognose even if you are allergic to there venom.

I would take on your OH again and try to convince her on a hognose.
If she remains concerned tell her not to handle it,it's not as though they hunt you down in the dead of night

Get a hoggie there great
Have had this argument with her many a time, but I will get one in the end [/quote]

If you're THAT worried about a hoggie bite just wear a glove or use a hook. They're truely great little snakes and full of personality. Quite active too. I've never seen one bite yet (and I've handled quite a few).

I also look after all the snakes in our house and am the one to get bitten. Simon's flaming Crawl Cay went for me with the intent of removing my hand from the wrist the other day!!!

Simon wanted and got a gtp, Bonsai and I look after him. We never handle him as he is young but he is easy to look after. I just move slowly around him and lift him out on his stick to clean him out. He happily sits on the bed, on his stick and looks around. He has never once snapped and is a beautiful display snake.

I would rather clean him out than the Crawl any day!!! Even the JCP has stopped biting now and has turned in to a sweet little snake.

I would have another gtp (once I can afford one!)

We love our GTP, we have had him for 2 years and he has never been a problem. We never handle him unless necessary and he has never once struck at us.
We know better than to do anything in his viv at night as once that light goes out, he's on it!
They are truly a beautiful snake and we are happy to just look at him!

yes, it is very tempting to just get Ming out to have a hold but we do resist!

And you are absolutely right, if you want it you gotta look after it!

Even when the novelty has worn off...they still need feeding, watering, cleaning and attention so if you really want something then prove you can step up and not hand it over to someone elses' care who will do the right thing as they feel bad for the snake.

Hate to admit it, but when your young and want a pet, parents always say no cos its gonna be me who ends up looking after it! And they are so right!

Keep your foot well and truly down....
