i would say a rat snake if you don't fancy a corn snake, for £300 you could get some stunners, they are chunkier than corns and aren't fussy eaters like royal/ball python, i have had to deal with a fussy eater before and force feeding isn't fun, a good thing to do would be to look up all the snakes that have been mentioned to you see which one appeals to you and your lifestyle most of all and then go into further research regarding that particular type of snake, good luck , hope you find the right snake mate

Well, I got my very first snake 2 day ago - a Mexican Rosy Boa. I couldn't be any more thrilled if I tried

Mexican Rosy's, along with the other locale Rosy Boas don't grow too big - i'm not keen on Royals and similar because I think once they are full size i'd find them difficult to handle.

The Rosy's are supposed very good starter snakes and I have to say, mine is ridiculously docile and fantastic to handle - and they are fairly thick bodied

Look into them - I have definitely been bitten by the bug

Sand Boas are supposed to be good starters too... also thick bodied!

Mexican black,thayers or ruthvens kings
bairds rats(the metallic colour on some is really nice)
would think things like trinket, radiated, diones and other ratsnakes would fall under the 4-5ft mark
leucistic ratsnakes
milksnakes like pueblans,sinoloans and nelsons
gopher snakes
western hognoses
rainbow boas like argentine or columbian
if you can find them savus or wetar pythons...very nice snakes
think thats enough lol

without trying to plug my own that i'm selling I can recommend a rat snake. Easy to feed, doesn't hide away all day like corns and royal (my royal that is) Sits all day on display on his branches and is happy to be handled. Ideal first snake that is problem free and can be handled which lets face it all new snake keepers want to do lots of. Pics will give you idea of difference in size of corns to rat snake.

corns and rat snake

The females thicken up nicely .... they can be just as big as most other colubrid snakes commonly kept as pets
