Default Humidity Issues with ATB

I moved my ATB's in 30x30x45 exo terra vivs last week.

They have a 60w ceramic bulb with a reflector just rested on top of the vivs.

I'm using orchid bark substrate with some moss.

There's fake vines and plants with 1 real piece of wood in each.

I was struggling to keep humidity (measuring in the middle) above 35% so I taped up half of the top of the grill lid, which raised levels to around 55%.

Now tonight I notice at substrate level the glass is misty and the wood is growing rot at the front of the viv. So I put the hygrometer on the bottom and it's now reading 79% and the last spray was last night.

So just wondering where I should take my reading from? I'm going to remove the rotting wood and find something more suitable. Should I continue giving them a good spray every night?

Many thanks in advance.

I would continue with the spraying but you might want to think about changing the substrate or applying a bit of bottom heat to the viv to help dry the substrate out (which of course will boost humidity levels).

I'ved 6x11 heatmats spare. Whats best way to use them though?

Tape them to glass under the viv or under the substrate in the viv?

And, shall I just plug them in or plug them into the pulse stat too?

Thanks.

Initially I would just place them under the viv attached to the same stat that you're using to control the main viv heater. When it comes to humidity issues you just have to play around with things a bit until you've tweaked it.

Thanks Rach, Oops, was bit keen on the day so must of missed that bit.

I think I'm sorted now, I've put the mats under now, so I'll leave it for tonight and see what readings I have in the morning.

Is Jay able to pick up emails?
