Default royal with R.I. what next? ideas please.

well me and my boy have been fighting hi r.i for a while now but going to vets again on monday but thought id ask if anyone had any ideas

its a regular strain (had a swab tested) that shoud be treatable by the regular antibiotics but no response yet ( have been nebulising with F10 for ages now, since before it was diagnosed and as soon as i thought it was an r.i. though maybe not as soon as if i had more experience)

so hes now finished his 5 doses of "fortum" , injected by me (god i hope i did them all right).

so thats about it. the vet might say do another course, or maybe another antibiotic or wanna sting me for more tests
wanna have some knowledge on my side if thats possible lol

thanks

Hi tricky. I myself cannot answer your questions as I have been incredibly lucky when it has come to RI's. I've had some that have dissapeared with just an increase in heat and the rest have gone with a course of oral Baytril from the vet.

However, I am sure that someone with a lot more experience will be along to give you some advice soon.

Good luck with the RI.

Oh tricky, I really do feel for you. It's horrible knowing that you're doing everything right but you see no improvement.

I think the vet is going to be the best qualified person to give you advice. Is your vet a specialist herp vet? If not then I would recommend finding one. The vet I use specialises in exotic animals and I have known people to drive the length and bredth of Scotland to get to them. They are however incredibly expensive but worth every penny.

I really do hope your boy comes through it soon for you.

It sounds to me as though you are doing everything right and it is just taking time. Your vet may suggest using Baytril in conjunction with Fortum as the germs seem resistant!

My big bci still has odd nebulisers after about 4 months of being sick and she also had 30 healthy babies 2 weeks ago which just shows how resilient they can be.

Good luck, just keep going, you will get there

ps if there is mucus still present, I find a bath in a v steamy room helps loosen and drain it

for RI's i raise temperature, lower humidity (smaller water bowl helps here) and put the snake on a course of either amikin or injectable baytrill (7 jabs, every 3 days, IM)..
