To be bitten shows that you as a keeper have failed, it is NOT something to be proud of.

The above statement does NOT include the photos provided by Stuart Douglas as they are a valuable insight into what could be classed as a near "worst case scenario" for a mangrove bite.
You're right it not something to be proud of, its something to learn from. Its a mistake - NOT a failure! Stuart got bitten - therefore in your eyes it is a failure - whether its a valuable insight or not! He's admitted it was a momentary laspe of something or another! Have you ever been bitten reticulatus?

I rarely get bitten.......

but the White lip female will have you every time...

It's all about knowing the snakes, being comfortable with the temperaments etc. If you don't accept the idea that you're going to get bitten at some point, then don't get an aggressive snake...

or a snake at all! most bites are from the snake being scared of you, ie being defensive, or triggering a feeding response... mistakes, but people (should) learn from mistakes..

All that being said though.... I'd much rather be bitten by a snake than by a rodent! They hurt!

i think it depends on the animal. for me i treat most non venomous snakes differantly to venomous ones. for example i am currently trying to get a 6 foot female het albino boa handleable, and i accept i will, and have been bitten by her. for me, yes it stings but it is something that will happen when trying to hand tame an animal. in the same way i do not handle wild venomous species with my hands - the least i use is a snake hook initially, as this gives control.

if you want i can get a photo of the boa bite up. looks alot worse than it is

Alex

agreed, some of my snakes are agressive, but if you know the snake well you wont get bitten as much (although they have got me a few times, through my own fault)

and ye, funnily enough rodent boites are a lot worse!! got bitten 3 times yesterday, 2 by snakes, and 1 by a rodent!! rodent was by far the worst!!

Tell you what, we should post some pics of dog bites, get a bit of perspective here. Snakes, lizards, inverts etc still have the holy st factor attached to their bites/stings because of people's inbuilt primeval fear of them. I guarantee, hot snakes aside, that I could find worse dog bite pictures than anyone has posted of their snakebites, but no-one worries about them being outlawed/legislated against, simply because dogs are "mans best friend" and snakes are "evil". I do agree, that simply posting a pic of a bite without attaching the whys and wherefores so that it can be instructional to others can smack of sensationalism and we all know that there are a few who rate being bitten as a badge of honour and it somehow makes them tougher' cos their snake has bitten them and they've got the scars to prove it. You only get bitten cos you're doing something you shouldn't or not doing something you should, simple as. I don't put my hands in with my mangroves at night, because I know exactly what the result will be, daytime is different, however, the stress of having a tube stuck down her throat for several successive days and the need for me to relax my grip in order to withdraw the tube gave her the opportunity to express her displeasure.
Bite pics are fine, so long as people post them for the right reasons and not for the "hey, look at me" factor

well whats the right reason then? is this thread for the wrong reason? we posted pics because we were asked to, not for the "hey, look at me factor" i dont see what people have against this thread, yes people make mistakes and get bitten, whats wrong with getting a pic of it, and also some snakes are aggresive basically for the sake of it, i have 2 snakes that bite for the sake of it, and 3 that bite because they are young and not tamed down yet. people who use this forum realise you will eventually be bitten, i really dont see the problem against this thread, i think its just people reacting and arguing for the sake of it. no one thinks they are great because they have been bit, and anyone in the right mind wont get bit if they can help it.

edit: did you also forget you have posted pics of your boiga bite on several forums?

hi guys i know im relativley new here, and my opinion probably wont matter but as a fairly new keeper of snakes, i feel a lot happier knowing im not doing anything bad, and possibly just the fact she is young, and not tamed down, might be the reason my female corn keeps biting my other half, she is very jumpy when trying to get her out, and hasn't had me as yet but i have no doubt that from looking at the experienced keepers getting bitten that ill get a bite or 3 before long, so thanks to all for owning up to not being perfect ( if thats the right word) and just shows that even the best people get a bite at some point or other, i feel a bit more confident now knowing it happens to us all.

i got bitten because i did something wrong in the eyes of my snake so tough luck on me and the situation that got me bitten wont happen again. as already stated someone asked people on here to post bite pics so thats what people did. too many people on here are quick to try and cause an argument. why can't you just take things like this at face value instead of trying to sound all righteous and hollier than thou
