Ok listen, i have a heatmat in a glass tank underneath a tile, the man in the reptile shop says i dont need a thermostat because he said heat mats have a built in thermostat to help it not over heat, is this true?

No - It's not true. You will need a thermostat.

Incorrect, you need a thermostat! Why do shops do this. If nothing else you would think they would want the sale

OK your a bright guy yes, so as you must know different snakes require different hot end temperatures yes? so does your heat mat have a dial that you can turn so that when a specific temperature is reached it turns off? no! then it does not have a built in thermostat and you will require one to stop your snake getting burnt or brain damaged. think about it and buy one!

is it true that u can buy heat mats with thermostats built in though? And i dont get how a thermostat could control that heat source just by resting on it, can someone explain?

Because the thermostat comes with a heat sensor probe, which rests on the heat mat, measuring the temperature. When it hits the temperature that the thermostat dial is set to, it tells it to stop heating up any more than it has. The temp will then drop say a degree below what the dial is set to, and then the probe will realize that the mat isn't the temperature it should be, and will then tell the mat that it needs to start heating up again.

thermostat explained simply
you plug the mat into the stat and the stat into the power,
the stat has a probe which sits on the mat and relays the mats temp to the stat,
the stat has a dial that you can set the max temp to and when the probe temp reaches that temp the stat cuts the power to the mat,
when the temp drops to under the set temp the stat powers up the mat again.
so the temperature of the mat fluctuates just slightly around the temp that you require it to be.

this is for a simple on/off stat and there are other types better for bulbs and ceramics.

same as above
