Don't get me wrong, I am no fan of inter-species hybrids, I don't even like most morphs! But Snake_Plisken's right, if somebody has been stupid enough to produce hybrid offspring there is no excuse to kill off healthy animals. They should just re-home/ look after them as best they can.

Isn't there some kind of law against stupidity like this? If there isn't, there should be!

i wish that was the case thrasops.. these americans and a couple of europeans.. not from the uk.. are hell bent on this method of disposing of these so called unwanted, sub species snakes as they call them.. i think that it should be illegal. i wish somebody would stick them in a freezer and let them see what it feels like.. sick bd's. i would home any snake that any of mine gave birth to even if it was not of a pure bloodline etc.. they make me soo mad.. its no different to the fanatical views of lets say the nazi's and the aryan race.. just with snakes not people!

sadly hunnie there is a handful on that site that are from the UK, but it seems that only one of the brits is in favour of freezing them.

yep i agree
theres a lot of people that have offered to rehome these hybrids and the problem is that they are getting told how immoral it is to allow the snakes to live....WTF!! isnt it immoral to kill them off, they are healthy, attractive no deformities, theres even a chance that these natural intergrades can and may have happened in the wild as there species borders cross each other

Again,
I'm going to pay devils advocate a little.

Firstly I'm must state that i ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE with freezing as a method of euthanasia. Just need to get that out of the way.

However, the arguement for euthanasia in itself isn't necessarily as cold-hearted as it sounds.

Garters are native to N. America. Over here in the UK, very few people actually keep native snakes and our relatively cold climate means that very few of the commonly kept species would survive in the wild.

The states has a huge number of native herps and many keepers in the US keep snakes that are native to N America. The guys on that forum are concerned that an escapee could easily survive if it escaped and if the animal is an intergrade between species that are not naturally found together then the intergrade will 'spoil the gene pool'. Just think how many people over here are adamant that boa localities are traceable, GTP's, ETB's, ATB's etc all demand high prices if the locale is traceable. Imagine if someone went and released a couple of bci's into the middle of Guyana or Suriname - even the wild populations wouldn't be pure blood lines.

I believe that is what they are getting at - rather than risk the wild populations (lets face it how many 'my snakes escaped' threads do we get on here!) then euthanase the litter, produced by mistake, and save the 'greater good'.

(Don't flame me - just looking at both sides - I'm actually on the fence on this one, just think about it from others point's of view - do I need to mention the burms in the Everglades?)

Cheers

Andy

i understand where your coming from but since they are from the states there are many of species all over the place in different locals, everyone knows how easy snakes can escape, infact on that very forum someon has lost a garter that is not native to that region. the point im making is that these intergrades can happen in the wild in there own local as the species border crosses. why is it any less right to let them live when you can have garters escaping and breeding with the local populace and spoiling that bloodline.

I thought, whlist reading the other forum that was the specific issue - the two species that bred were not two that would naturally meet, and to top that, the OP that bred them lived in another area entirely to where either if the original species live.

Cheers

I appreciate where you are coming from, and IMO this turn of events should not have resulted in the first place, but animal cruelty is animal cruelty... who are we to play god with these things and decide they would be better off dead than alive?

Again, appreciate the balanced opinion, and I see where it's coming from, but the animals are here now whether the keepers like it or not... killing them is just the cheap and easy way out and (I think) inexcusable.
