when i was readin it parts of it read like people didnt want the crosses in their breeding lines not just in the wild
i can understand the whole for the greater good of the wild animals but thats not how it was coming across. if they were that bothered about the wild animals then surely they shouldn't advocate taking them from the wild. again i understand for new bloods lines its sometimes needed but some of it again read like they didnt bother buying from anyone for new blood lines cos its not 100% safe to trust them

TianRunty and rapunzel, you are so right!!!! it doesnt come across as an act to protect anything it comes across to me as something to be done just because they dont like them.
i would happily rehome a same sex pair and not allow them to be bred on but unfortunately they are in the states.

Well ... I've been involved in the lovely discussion on the forum - still - Like mentioned about buying reputable snakes from breeders and localities - how about an example like ordering an everglades ratsnake only to have one arrive that is obviously part corn (unlike the naturally acceptable intergrade with a yellow rat snake) for example ... wouldn't that be a little annoying .... or the amount of times you see people posting their new snakes only to be told they're not quite the snake they think they have etc, etc. Personally I wouldn't feed or freeze unless the snake was obviously defective.
Accidents do happen and people will mislabel things and hybrids will pass unnoticed. Both sides of the argument are just as good as each other - but then it's head vs heart and down to the individuals at the end of the day. There's no Nazi rule ... it's the mainstay of ecologists, zoologists, conservationist, herpetologists, etc ... all over the world. |

The problem is we do play god with snakes to produce different morphs.
I ain't saying killing them is right though.

Interesting comments, guys. But I think many of you have responded in a very negative and aggressive manner without reading through the thread on Thamnophis.com, bit of a knee-jerk reaction from you all I think.
Clearly, the reasoning behind euthanasia is to avoid the muddying of wild (and captive) bloodlines, nothing to do with facism, racism or the search for perfection. Some of the comments from the generous people who have offered to rehome these snakes, clearly show that they have no idea on their care, or how to prevent future accidental breeding. One member suggested 'not hibernating them, so the won't breed'. There's the next batch straight away! |

Yeah! Can't get my head around some of the comments about that....and I read them all. If you don't want them to breed....keep them all seperately, and don't put any of them together...even if you think they are same sex...mistakes with sexing happens. Really simple common sense.
Some people no matter how well meaning from an ecology point of view, came across on that forum as quite rude, arrogant, and bullying...like "my way is the only way" attitude. Manners don't cost anything. Some people get behind a computer keyboard, and good manners and politeness go out of the window, ......perhaps I'm just too soft, and don't like to upset people!
