does he bite only when hes handled or does he actually charge at you when you open his tank?

It is possible but Garters arnt really territorial and they havent been known to be cannabalistic unless it males eating the young, all other events of cannabalism have been accidents, in fact they often live in small colonies and winter together.
when ever you go into the viv, use hand sanitizer first, make sure its dry. do the water changes and spot cleaning and make no attempt to handle the snake, infact pretend hes not there, even when he rushes you, bites from a young garter are more shocky than painful, so try to remember to not react to his charges. keep this going for around 2 weeks and then slowly he should lay off the aggression. then you can bring in a touch to his tail now and then and gradually bring the contact up to handling. it sounds more defensive aggression than outright aggression. good luck any more probs give me a shout.

oh Emma im so glad u didnt convince me to buy one as well! little sod! we were handling a bitey corn the other day at one stop, and jon told me to cup him in my hands for a while, and then open up and he was calm it was awesome lol. so wen u do decide to attempt to handle him again, try that. my geckos have bit me 3 times in the last week, no more snake bites yet. however im going to play with Mason's retics tomorrow so that should be fun! xxx
