Default psycho garter

i know that garters can be a bit jumpy but this 1 is getting 2 be a joke!
Put my hand in 2 change his water and he bit me. O.H got him out and all he did was strike at his face and hands (and me from the other side of the settee) i was told that all he would do is musk but iv not seen him do it once. He was one of the red barred garters from doncaster for £10 and i dont think hes ever even had human contact before. tried to feed him but was more interested in my fingers even when the pinky was cut in half and brained (just incase hes a problem feeder anyway)
Can anyone think of anything else i could try other than just handling him a lot so he gets used to me??
Emma xxx

Well you for start . As to backbone, I think I've had enough running battles on here of which you are al too aware. If the cap fits wear it. Maybe a nice SS one.

ok your setup looks fine infact its brilliant.
does he bite only when hes handled or does he actually charge at you when you open his tank?

he charges at the slightest crack of the door opening. not slow either. might he be able to smell another snake on me or the viv and feel threatened by it?

It is possible but Garters arnt really territorial and they havent been known to be cannabalistic unless it males eating the young, all other events of cannabalism have been accidents, in fact they often live in small colonies and winter together.
when ever you go into the viv, use hand sanitizer first, make sure its dry. do the water changes and spot cleaning and make no attempt to handle the snake, infact pretend hes not there, even when he rushes you, bites from a young garter are more shocky than painful, so try to remember to not react to his charges.
keep this going for around 2 weeks and then slowly he should lay off the aggression. then you can bring in a touch to his tail now and then and gradually bring the contact up to handling.
it sounds more defensive aggression than outright aggression.
good luck any more probs give me a shout.

oh Emma im so glad u didnt convince me to buy one as well! little sod! we were handling a bitey corn the other day at one stop, and jon told me to cup him in my hands for a while, and then open up and he was calm it was awesome lol. so wen u do decide to attempt to handle him again, try that. my geckos have bit me 3 times in the last week, no more snake bites yet. however im going to play with Mason's retics tomorrow so that should be fun! xxx
