Default Angry Young Burm

A few weeks ago I posted about my young burm not taking a dump in the 6 or 8 weeks I had him and some of you guys helped me out with suggestions, the main one being a warm bath.

I gave him a bath and he duly "did his business" but got rather agitated and bit me while trying to get him out of the water.

Since then he has been very difficult to handle, constantly hissing and striking. I try to handle him every day, even if it's only for a minute, except feed day and the day after.

He is about 5' and approx 6 months old, is it just a case of persevering and increasing the handling until he gets used to it or could the fact that he is in a rub be affecting his temperement. He was moved to this after his first shed as we found mites which have been treated and seems clear now but I was waiting till his next shed to be absolutely sure before returning him to the snake room in a proper viv.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Having kept numerous burms, at various sizes theres defo a point where they act like stroppy teenagers and have huffs, it is a case of winniing them over and handling through it, they do calm down again , so do persevere,

In my experience burms do go through a very stroppy stage at young ages.It is usually food related so you may find that you need to increase the amount you feed him. From the sounds of things he is hungry now that he has had a good clear out.I would personally increase the size of the prey item and see how you go.Perservere with the handling and dont become afraid to handle it as this will just make the snake strike out more if you leave it.

I agree with Kieran. Its very easy when your snake gets like this to go of handeling them (only natural cos nobody likes to be bitten). But if you dont presevere and keep going with it,you will end up with a very big, very unmanagable big snake. Keep on in there.

Thanks folks.

He is currently in one of those "really useful" boxes with a heatmat and newspaper sub. He has a cardboard hide as everything can be thrown out easily. I'm gonna but him back in his 3 ft tank after he has shed and i'm sure he's clear of mites. At the moment he has recently stepped up from one jumbo mouse a week to one small rat.

Does this give enough information to have a better idea?

Thanks

He could be snappy due to mites??? Also change from a cardboard hide to a plastic one, less bacteria etc

Hey Danny,

I'm certain the mites have been succesfully treated, I'm just waiting for the next shed to be on the safe side but i'm confident that isn't the reason as they were being treated way before he got like this. The turning point seemed to be the bath scared him

my one burm was hissy after her first bath but luckily didnt bite me.....
i found that she became more voiced when she knew i didnt get her out if she hissed, but tbh its all show with her, now shes fine and its my other burm thats abit mardy.
Also disturbing them in the day can make mine hissy theyre alot better to handle at night seem to enjoy it more because of them being nocturnal.
Just keep purseveering and it will work.....when he strikes out in the viv does he actually open his mouth as most just go for abit of a nose bunt and being a lazy burm is probly what he does lol!

He will come good in the end.
