Personally I am not a fan of sand as a substrate for most snakes because of the problems it can cause - especially if it gets under belly scales. My Hoggies like Aspen, auboise or hemcore which does not have that problem and still lets them burrow.

looking at your pic i would say male the tail looks quite long from the vent i use playsand too i makesure i have my substrate very deep for mine as they like to borrow my female is a guts she eats loads and has even tried to eat a large pebble while the male only takes every 2 weeks the best thing bout these is to leave your male to settle because where i dont handle the hoggies much the male is showing wild behavour by spreading his neck thinly and hissing trying to pretend he can bite me and all you ever get is a headbutt i know these snakes dont get very big but my female is well over 2 and a half foot
