Hello craig 8989. I have kept snakes for 16years and i have never had a problem not using uv for snakes. But for lizardss its a must, except for nocturnal ones, such as leopard geckos. If you want to use uv for extra light i would not use anything higher than 2%uv. Anything higher will hurt the snakes eyes.

I believe diamond pythons are the only snakes that supposedly need UV.

The reason for using UV is to simulate natural sunlight, which is essential for animals which feed on invertebrates. This is because the UV element of light acts as a catalyst for the conversion of vitamin D to calcium. Given that the majority of snakes are not invertebrate feeders, then UV really is not needed.

The only snake i can think of that would benefit from uv light would be Rough Green Snakes, which feed on crickets etc

According to this article there are a few snakes that some experts believe would benefit from UV. Of course, need and benefit are two different things;

It wont hurt them as long as the uv is no highre than 2%, for a snake.

Yes, but the point is that some snakes do actually benefit from it (even though it may not be a definite requirement). That's very different from saying that a bit of UV won't do any harm.
