You should really just turn it down a bit with the stat, you shouldnt turn it off in case it gets too cold.

A heat mat can't cause issues for your animals unless you have it set up incorrectly/without a stat. By set up incorrectly, I mean covering too much of the floor space, the snakes need a thermal gradient, so they can warm up and cool off whenever they choose, so for this purpose the mat should cover no more than a third of the floor. Without a stat, well, self explanatory really - uncontrolled a mat will get too hot and burn your snake. I've never heard of heat stress before, but can only imagine it would result from an animal being unable to escape the heat source and cool down. As long as they can always do that, no problemo!

I agree with bernie, aslong as there is a choice of temps in the viv with suitable hides then no problem with heat mat to be left on. Always use a stat.

Leave the heat mat on only if your room does not meet the night time low temperature limit for the animal in question. My Retics, Green Anaconda and Hog Island Boa all get no vivarium heating at night as the room is kept in the mid 20's 24/7.

No! leave the mat on. The mat stat will switch it on and off as the night progresses.
