It is a Baby Grass Snake (Natrix Natrix) They are Rear Fanged, but apparently not even as potent as Hognoses... so no danger to humans what so ever...

It aint illegal to take these from the wild... only Smooth snakes and some of the native lizards...

But they dont do well in captivity at all, they mainly eat, Fish, Frogs and worms.... and can stress really easy...

They prefer places near water, like ponds etc...

So for the best i think you should release it/

Regards

Declan

Weelad is spot on! This comes up time and again, and folks are always scaremongering over what is legal and what isn't, to clarify, grass snakes are completely harmless, they may musk and bite (which really stinks) but thats about the extent of it!

Animals

Check out the government website for the actual wording of the law, but basically, you cannot kill or injure them, or sell them, but you can keep them. Its not advised as they don't do particulraly well in captivity and well, to be honest, they should be left where they are. Good save from the car park though!

They both have mildy toxic effects to their saliva, grass snakes are NOT rear-fanged. Garters have enlarged rear teeth but are not a proper grooved fang.

Grass snake skull can be seen here

Which is different in structure to the garters you mention, see here
