Default A nice find in Tescos car park

Look what greeted me when I stepped out of the car this afternoon in Tescos car park.

Is this a baby Grass Snake? Sorry it's a poor photo, had just bought a new phone only minutes before and was fumbling severely trying to grab a shot.

It's in a spare viv at the moment, not sure on the legality of that, are they a protected species or something? Just wanted to get it out of the car park for obvious reasons.
Would keeping it be a no go? I'm planning on a Corn snake soon anyhow, but thought I'd save this little chap/ess from the 4 by 4s.

Any advice welcomed.

im pretty sure its illegal to keep them but dont hold me to it. From what i know it will be very dificult to get to feed and would prob be better off being released in a field

If it is a grass snake, they are completely non-venomous and legal to keep (although not to sell!). However, the best thing to do would be to put it back on the nearest bit of countryside to where you found it.

Great work for saving it though!

yes it is illegal to care or have any british reptile that has been found... either contact your local wildlife hospital etc rspca should put you in touch or find a nice woodland area and let him go. make sure there is a sort of pond there though if you do. they like water. good luck looking after him though if you do keep him. its entirely your decision just dont get caught ... check for parisites all the normal stuff anyway... they love playing dead tho .. have fun with it and well done for the rescuing of the snake (not sounding patronising at all).

*hint hint* they love frogs too

sorry but it is illegal in main land england. need a license to handle them, as they are part of the british wildlife and shouldnt be taken out of its enviroment (however this was found in car park so bit different) same with any lizard/snake found etc... in isle of white there are loads, same as adders .. dont get bitten tho

here

Quote:
Protection against killing, injuring and sale, etc
This level of protection applies to the four widespread species of reptile, namely the common lizard, slow-worm, grass snake and adder. Only part of sub-section 9(1) and all of sub-section 9(5) apply; these prohibit the intentional killing and injuring and trade (i.e. sale, barter, exchange, transporting for sale and advertising to sell or to buy). It is not an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to possess these animals.
