now that pisses me off, im so sick of seeing burms and retics in the classifieds with some lame excuse for why someone is getting rid of it. Way way too many people buy them, keep them to like 7-8ft and then try and get rid of them. In my own opinion, these big snakes should not be sold in pet stores either, but by registered breeders only. Thus anyone who wants one, can still get them, but they have to go thru the whole process. This would mean the snakes are more likely to end of with proper owners.

So your telling a twelve year old with his only experience being a royal to go and buy a burm and after 12 months sell it on if its not for him !!

Burms can easily pass 6ft in a year being maintain fed you would have to pretty much starve it for it not to !!

Mint advice that !!

Thumbs down

Tbh, at 12, getting a Big Snake would more than likely be more for your image "Ohh come look at my big Snake" Seriously, stay with the Royal, the others will get too big before you know it, Burms get to 7ft within a year, so seriously, get a Corn or something SMALL time...

I may sound a twat, but i know, from experience, Trust me, if you got a Corn, it'd be just as much fun than a Big Scary Snake that won't scare anyone..

Rant Over.

Hi

I'm not gonna say "get a boa first" because if you want a burm or a retic, there's no point getting a boa.

However I'd definitely wait a few years until you make plans to get a big snake, & think long & hard about it.

There's so much to think of, in a few years will you still have time for it? Are you planning on going to university? Will you have people there to support you & assist you when feeding, handling & even simple everyday things like changing the water?

Also will you have the room for an adult burm/retic?

It's just not a very good idea, you really are too young to own a snake of this size. I know it sounds patronising dude & I'm sorry about that.

I doubt your parents would be too happy though neither? With you getting a snake that could potentially kill you & them, would they be able to help you do basic maintenance? Would they be prepared to constantly be around you when getting it out for exercise?

I can't comment on that side of things, maybe they are just as interested in snakes as you are.

My advice to you would be to read up a hell of a lot, & talk to your parents about it; don't just mention it to them. They need to be very much involved in this as it's a decision you really shouldn't take lightly.

I spose I'm lucky as both my parents seem enthusiastic about me getting my burm in the next few weeks, we've been talking about it for a good few months & we've weighed up the pros & cons of keeping a large snake. I know for a fact that they'll be around whenever the viv door is unlocked, & they're fully aware of the size it can/will reach. You need to talk about all of this & make sure you can also guarantee that your parents are prepared to be around you to assist you & also that they understand the size it will get to, size viv it will need & just how dangerous it can be.

I think you're better off discussing it with your parents for a few years, & do an immense amount of research into the big snakes, then if you're still prepared & the circumstances are right then I'd say go for it (in a couple of years!)

But just enjoy your royal for now & any snakes you aquire along the way.

Really sorry if I came across as patronising dude, I didn't mean to!

& welcome to the forum.

Whats Your Opinions
I was thinking any of these .
1.1 Burmese Python
2.0 Reticulated Pythons
1.1 Dwarf Reticulated Python
whats your opinions .

P.s ; i know im young but why do people have to hate on young people owning large snakes, as long as its a hatchling when i purchase it , i should be fine ?
I know where you're coming from hun, but you've got plenty of years ahead of you to buy as many huge snakes as you please. Work your way up slowly, there are other large snakes other than the ones you've shown interest in except they don't grow just as large, but still great snakes. Try a dwarf boa www.gazboas.co.uk or a kingsnakes, some of them grow fairly large, females being larger than males. Look into rat snakes too, some of them get really large. A burmese python for your 21st would be a pretty cool birthday present to look forward to in my opinion.

if you really like retics, get a super dwarf, they look the same!! A boa does not look like a retic but you cant argue a super dwarf retic does not look like a retic, it will look similiar but not grow to them massive legth of a normal retic.

your a bit young dude. these snakes when adult have great strenth. watch this thing on tv. a retic wich was constricting at 91psi thats the same as a adult man laying on his back with a u.s school bus on hes chest! If you realy want a big snake you should not just jump strate to the top of the ladder. you need to work your way up. if you have a royal you should go for boa or carpet python or something. but i would even say these could be to big.

So if you're 12 years old & you want a big snake, it must be an image thing? Purely because of his age? Yeh.. okay then.
