Please explain this to my female spotted python, who DID in fact try to eat our male.

Count me as another vote for "No, it's not a good idea, and you might find yourself learning an expensive lesson if something goes wrong."

It may be convenient in the short term to have fewer cages, but it can be much more expensive in terms of vet bills, lost animals and so forth.

I know of hatchling green tree pythons that have eaten each other when housed together. Both the eater and (obviously) the eaten usually die as a result of this...and, at around 10g in weight, you don't get many pythons smaller the chondro hatchlings.

It probably is highly unlikely to happen, but definitely more likely to happen with co-habitation than it is when they're housed on their own.
