Question Whats a goood price for a breeding pair of garter snakes ?

My pet shop has a breeding pair of garter snakes the guy showed me one of the hatchlings so they are proven. He's asking £50 for the pair or a reasonable offer.
Anybody got any advice? I know they are pretty easy to look after and they looked really healthy but not sure what to offer him though.

Are these the ones that need vitamin supplements, the local network has been down for the best part of 3 days so haven't been able to research yet.

Cheers ma dears, Christine,

If they are a breeding pair then £50 is a very fair price. Regarding supplements, it depends on what they are being fed on. As adults they should really be on mice, in which case no supplements are needed.

You don't need a 4 foot viv for a pair of garters!!!! I had my breeding pair of chequereds in a 2 foot viv, they bred 2 years running and were quite happy in that sized viv.

Sorry 4ft not for garters, need to upgrade my blue tongue, then move the python into the bluey's viv then I will have the small viv free for the garters.
Was wondering if they climb a lot cos I could put a raised platform in the small viv to create more ground space. Cheers Christine

I think they're more ground-dwelling snakes in the wild, but it seems to depend on the snake as to whether or not they climb - some love doing it, but mine has never shown the slightest interest in his branch...

Aah, I got it wrong then! Garters may make some use of branches and climbing space, it really depends on the species. I have had chequereds, which never bothered with the branches I put in to their viv, and Easterns which climbed regularly.

I kept mine in a a 2ft viv, they were quite happy in there.

Thanks every one. Think I will try them in the small viv first with a raised platform. The viv was originally custom built for tree frogs so has height rather than ground space. If they don,t climb then I,ll get a 2ft viv for them.
I have never bred herps before but garters are live bearers so thought they would be easier to start with.
Cheers everybody Christine
