My female Boa just shed. She's not easy to measure as like most snakes she won't stay still for long.
As this shed is nice complete, one piece and undamaged I just wondered is there a rough "rule of thumb" as to how much a shed skin is longer than the living snake. 5%, ? 10% ? I reckoned she wasn't much short of 6 feet and the shed skin is 6ft 2". A lot easier to measure the shed skin and then knock a bit off - if there is a reasonably accurate way of working out how much to knock off. Any ideas ?

I think it depends on a lot of variables to be honest, type of snake, whether it is still moist or has started to dry etc at arough guess it's probably around 10%.
I use the snake measurer program for the pc its a lot easier to measure them this way I'll try to find it for you. :: Ians Vivarium - Free Downloads :: |

Many thanks for the link. I was cleaning out her Viv today so I let her slither around the landing ![]() I took a photo from directly above ( a bit blurry but enough for the purpose). The lower edge of the piece of paper is exactly 6 inches long, so using the calculator and adding on an inch for the tip of her tail which is tucked under her body, it came to 71.9", so she is just about bang on 6ft. ![]() With her shed skin just 6ft 2", thats only a strech of about 3 percent. The skin when measured had only be shed a couple of hours earlier and wa still damp so it hadn't shrunk much through drying out. So it looks like measuring a (very) freshly shed skin can be pretty accurate.
