Default Mites grrrrr

OK, found out last night that my boa has mites. Checked my king as well and he seems to be fine but I'll treat him and his viv as well as a precaution.

Just wondered if people knew where mites come from in the first place.

Thanks

On The more serous note....

Mites are often found when recently purchased a new snake. However, if not the case, it could be spread by other animals and from substrates. I believe bark is a fantastic breeding ground for mites.

Good luck iraditcating them. If nto done/told so aready, I would remove any substrate, disinfect down, lay newspaper or kitchen towel and go on with the treatment.

We have recently had a mite problem.

Our smaller corn and royal have mites as they were on eco-earth, but our larger corn has no mites and is on aspen.

We have treated the python and corn yesterday afternoon with Mite-Off but I still see them on the head of the corn especially. We have totally disinfected the enclosures and placed them both on aspen.

Will this problem rectify itself from here? I dont know much about mites, but will the sudden dryness of substrate kill them? Or will they require more treatment?

mites can be a real problem and some treatments work better than others -- one problem is that even if you kill all the mites there will still be loads of egges waiting to hatch and re infest, If you are going to eradicate you need to get rid of all substrate except newspaper - remove all wood and any other textured surfaces.

I use carboard hides during this process as they can be chucked when you are done.

There are loads of different treatments - my own preference in frontline which I dillute and wipe over the snake using kitchen roll and then wipe out the inside of the viv with the rest - leave the water bowl out for a couple of days

I have always had complete success and no problems

good luck with the lil blighters

Took the boa out of its usual home and put it in a rub with just a water bowl, a cardboard hide and a water dish and kithen roll as a substrate. Have boiled, disinfected and treated its usual home and hides and water dish with frontline. Will be rubbing snake down with some spray from my local reptile shop as I don't want to make a mistake with fronline on him. Obviously I'll be doing the same with the other snake as well.

Any other tips would be good. (Will be rubbing them down with veg/olive oil as well)

You seem to have done your resarch! I Think you've covered everything. Just the normal stuff like, washing hands after handling the snake etc. Or even moving the vivarium into a different room. But all is well, Let me know when the treatment has done it's wonders!
