i put a night time red bulb in once, but only had a pulse stat not a dimmer so plugged into the mains, in the few minutes i was looking in the viv the temp rocketed to about 95. so i took it out

Its a pretty big 46w one i`d normally use for heating 2-3 50l tubs, but wattage is only dependant on the size of the mat. Even the smallest mats are capable of these temperatures. Only a small portion of this mat was covered with the tub and more of it exposed to the open air. If anything i imagine a smaller mat completely covered with no air exposure therefore more insulation would actually get hotter than this one.

I agree this should be a sticky.
Get so Pee'd off with people saying that you dont need a thermostat with a heat pad (partulary when newbies buy a starter kit from a shop).

Just to put it into perspective, the thermometer on the surface of the mat maxed at 158F, which is 70C, it probably got hotter but i don`t have a thermometer handy that`ll go that high.
You can cook an egg at 63C.
