Default what should I put in a 55 gallon aquarium

Ok, I have a empty 55 gallon aquarium with dimensions 48 inches long, 13 wide, 18 high. I was wondering what would be a good snake or snaked to go in that tank. I have alwaya wanteed a western hognose snake but was told it would just be a waste of space. I also looked into a royal but was told royals like much smaller tanks. So what should I do about this?

Your tank is nice and long, but is quite narrow at 13 inches.

Aquariums are also difficult to keep snakes in. Especially big ones like yours.

I have never tried myself, but apparently heating can be a problem in large vivs which are all glass. You would also need to cover up three sides to make the resident feel more secure.

Not sure on species though. As I said, with it being narrow, you may struggle with bigger species.

Rough greens possibly?? Some kind of small fast snakes?? Racers?? Garter colony??

Anyone else????

Sorry but i have to say it.55 gallon aquarium put some nice fish in it and buy a vivarium for the snake you want to get.

I dont mean that in a nasty way but snakes do not do to well when they are in all glass tanks. You would need to cover 3 sides of the tank so that the snake felt a little more secure so as not to stress it out.

The other problem i have personally found with all glass tanks is getting and maintaining the right temps and gradients as well as the humidity.

Absolutely - fish tanks are for fish.

If you want a snake, do the whole thing properly from the start and get a viv. If you shop around you can get some good deals, or pick up a 2nd hand bargain on eBay - just make sure you thoroughly disinfect it first before use.

I've got to agree with the above comments, You'll have a problem heating a large glass tank. Get a nice wooden viv, easier to set up and better insulation.

Snakes aren't keen on people approaching them from above, Get a front opening viv, that you can approach the snake from It's own level!

Behind this comment 100%

Fish tanks are designed to keep water and fish in, maybe turtles or frogs would be more ideal.

Fish.

Thats what fish tanks are for.

There are sooo many issues with using fish tanks for viviariums it just not worth bothering.

Stick it on ebay or the freeads and get a viv which should be cheaper anyway, I had nothing but problems with glass tanks, rubbed noses, badly heated - and then the glass at the bottom cracked from the heat mat in the end! Never using all glass again! Nothing like a feisty snake who thinks everytime you move there's food and strikes at the glass and hits themself in the face - amusing the first time, but then it's just distressing for everyone.
