I always think that natural light is the best to use although this isn't always possible. If your using an slr camera take a light Reading and take a few test shots then wait for your snake to appear where you want it. With regards to background that's down to personal taste. You may want to catch it in it's 'natural' habitat or with a plain background, either way it's best not to have a too cluttered background as it draws your eye from the subject. Hope that helps
