Why do people say vivs are too big for a snake? I know snakes like to feel secure, but in the wild there are no limitations as to where the snake can go. So why is this any different in captivity and why do people say not to put a juvenile snake in a big viv?

all a massive loads of bullocks conjured up (in my opinion of course) by money hungry reptile shops to set up a customer who then needs to return to constantly upgrade then buy a few bits why their there cuz the hides and stuff are too small now!

i can understand not putting a boa in a big viv if you have no stuff init at all (not many hides ETC) but yes as you say they do it in the wild so i don't really see the point! im on a mission to get every snake i ever purchase into the largest viv possible from day one and see if i have problems! my money is on me!

That's what I was thinking. Most reptile places are all about the money. A while back when I first started with reptiles, I bought everything from the reptile shop. Pretty much every decorative item is around a tenner. I know better now and buy from the internet or buy alternatives (that work just as well) from garden centres and such.

I still don't understand the whole big viv thing. I think it's one of those things where people have heard it or read it and then they repeat it as gospel without any actual evidence. Vivs kill tortoises is a very common one and I know that to be untrue because my torts need to be kept in a viv and haven't died in over 10 years.......

Talking

he comes with a rub actually so that will probably just be temporary because i plan on doing a big display viv also most people say boas like to climb so a rub might be a bit confined for something that likes to climb

I have 3ft boas in a 4ft viv and they love it. Boas like to climb, so IMO a rub is like putting me in a room with no internet. If you deccor the viv out well you shouldnt have a problem. well, I never have.

well i can see my bcc fine in his RUB, also when do you ever hear my snake has got out of his RUB? and when do you ever hear my snakes got out of his viv?
RUBs are cheaper and more secure IMO.
its what you just like though, i would prefere my snake in a smaller space to ensure he feeds.
also to regards to the space issue in the wild and in captivity, you wonder why snakes live longer in captivity? because sometimes somethings are better without. thanks

There are many more factors to consider with snakes living longer in captivity. The weather for instance - a snake in the wild is actually up against the elements. Other things such as drought. The shortage of food - I know certain species can go months without food. But if things affect other animals that snakes eat then this could shorten their life span. Plus, it's easy to say a snake lives for how ever many years in captivity, it's in captivity so you know how old it is. Catching one in the wild would just be a guess and you would have to catch it as well. Just because it's not been documented doesn't mean it doesnt exist. There could be a very old snake out there somehwere - how do you know it isn't?

Doesn't matter how big the viv is. Just ensure it is packed with plenty of hides, foliage, branches, substrate and water bowls etc. As long as you have an accurate emulation of its natural habitat, it will live quite happily.
