Default Underweight Royal

Hey guys, my royal decided to fast and she ate on 22nd Feb (1stt ime this year) 1 fuzzie and 1 mouse. Then she ate on 22nd March, one fuzzy and 2 mice. Fed her again lastnight, she ate 1mouse.

I am delighted she has regained her appetite, however, I am concerned that she is underweight. She is 6yo, and looks very slender. Haven't weighed her, obut i can see that she is thin. guesstimate is that she is around 800g.

Any advice is much appreciated. should i feed little and often, or just get her back to her normal regime of 2 large mice every 10 days?

Thanks guys

I would feed her the normal amounts you feed but every 5-7 days to regain weight. Also I would put her on rats if you can as I beleive rats have more nutrition than mice.

I would increase the meal size.. feed her a XL mouse, and then try doubling it up 1 week later.. my guess is at 6yo she can easily manage the largest of mice, and definitely more than one... Might also be worth probing if she's not already been probed. One of our largest females can devour about 12 large mice in one sitting. Would also be very helpful for you to get a set of balances.. you can get them at asda.. just make sure the scale goes up to around 5kg, so you can weigh her throughout her life.

I would have thought that at 6 years old she would be on rats. My 2 year old (female) has been on small rats for quite a while and weights 1250g last time I weighed her. Are you sure she's a female? Out of interest - what does other people's adult females weigh? (want to make sure mine's not overweight)

we have a few 06's that are pushing 700g. Others around 500g, and others we not long received are still only around 200g (but feeding). Our oldest is 12 years old, and weighs 3.2kg at the moment. We have another adult about 4 years old weighing 2.4kg. I don't powerfeed any of mine, i just leave them to it every week.. weaners, largish weaners and small rats are usually all I feed them. I try and pick out the smaller weaners for those 06's that are around 200g. But i have a few that only take mice, and i feed a large mouse to a 200g female once a week.

When i rehomed her, i was instructed that her regime was 2 large mice every10 days. At first, i didn't want to change it until she settled in, then she fasted.

So i can now feed her more often, and larger amounts?

Problem was, she wouldnt entertain even small mice, I resorted to offering fuzzies, just to get her to eat something. She seems to have a complex about larger items!!

So maybe Friday, 3 mice?

I hope my girl perks up soon, I didnt realise how drastically underweight she was getting. But what can you do? I didnt think it was desperate enough to warrant force feeding

p.s. definately female

I wouldn't worry too much about it.. my mate gave me my now oldest royal... he fed her 1 large mouse per week.. i think she weighed about 1.4kg when i got her, and she was 6yo then as well. I'd guess 3 mice per week will be fine, it's a good thing she will feed at all and not worry about force feeding. I've also heard that some females are just small royals, so it happens - not sure how common that is though.. i would think not very.

When i took her on she wasnt what i would call very big. long story....shedding problems etc. she just wasnt herself. now she is eating again i am happy. i will feed her as per your instruction, every 5-7 days, and go up to 3 mice. when they are used, we'll try her on rats. she certainly seems hungry, but i dont want to over indulge her at such an early stage, give her belly a chance to accomodate larger meals.

Thanks for your help

I had a moment to myself lastnight. Went to put 2 mice in for Belle, and as i opened the viv, she struck me! Filled my pants....she has never done this before.

At least she is hungry though and seems to have some attitude
