when my lizards had mites i had to bath them in warm water and treat them - i was told not to remove any !
You are allowed to remove them, ticks you aren't allowed to remove as their heads stay in them. Just don't squash them between your fingers as this can give disease to the reptile.
Try bathing the snake and rubbing them off under water and try rubbing some sunflower oil on him/her, that ussually works. I usually use frontline but i wouldn't use this near the head.

yup and another way is if you dab cotton bud of vaseline around the eye. This also suffocates the little poo heads... strangely when we did this the little bugger came straight off, not sure if that was meant to happen but it did. then we squashed the little b*****d
we used to put a piece of no pest strip on the screen top for a day or two it worked and killed every mite in cage, but nowadays that's probibly frowned upon. don't they sell mite fid treatments at your pet shops? we have them here, never used them though
