If you are thinking the Ahaetulla species then yes they do come into the UK, but they tend to be fairly heavy with parasites and a certain amount of loses is almost bound to occur. They are frog and lizard eating snakes plus will also take small snakes as well. With patience and luck then some people have converted them to rodents, but this isn't as easy as normal snakes as they are very skinny when they come in and will never be big so you will have to feed them or force feed until they voluntary feed on rodents.
Fairly easy to care for once feeding, tall or spacious viv, very high humidity, must be sprayed a lot as they will drink from their bodies and also they absorb most water through their skin. Plenty of greenery in there so they can hide (though mine used to sit at the front on the glass). They aren't really for handling as they are a fairly nervous species and it may stress them out. More just for display animals. They are 'rear' fanged, well actually two sets of top fangs and a set of bottom fangs, huge teeth for the size of the mouth really. The venom isn't thought to be dangerous, as far as I'm aware then no serious cases have been reported though effects certainly have happened. Care must be taken as with any rear fanged. They also have along strike range and will look at your face and strike towards it. Retail prices vary a lot, there are some CB around but they are very rare, most are WC. Prices vary in shops from around 75 to 150 for them, but like I say unless you know the animal is doing well then be prepared for the worst when you get one. Stunning animals though, I've just put on an order for another one. If the order actually comes in to europe. Mike |

no i meant the ahaetulla. not good on the latin yet. thanks for the info. sounds like a relatively advanced snake in terms of snakes.
out of interest although i understand it's better to convert them to rodents) are there any companies that do frozen frogs or lizards. I'd assume not!

Are the house gecko's frozen?
Don't know if i would have the heart to kill baby anoles! I'd rather not have a long nosed tree snake. ps dan, do you ever have these for sale ( the snakes not the gecko's). I know that you sometimes have have slightly more unusual species available!

3/4 of the battle with gecko/lizard eaters is getting them to eat prekilled/defost.
The problem is that they are visual hunters and the movement of the gecko is what makes them eat. If you can get them onto dead geckos then getting them onto rodents is easy. I do have them for sale every now and again. They're usually about £35ish each (off the top of my head). |
