I am about to buy my first kingsnake and am collating as much info as I can before buying. Can I ask, is it really necessary to put the snake in a feeding tank? What would happen if I fed it in its own tank? and if I have to use a feeding tank but cant touch my snake for 48 hrs after feeding, how do I put my king back in his home after lunch?
Thanks, confused Badger. |

wen they say dont handle for 48 hrs as this can cause them stress and can lead to regurging, all ya doing is pick up and place in viv. the snake can handle that.
it is safe to pick them up up after feeding as long as you support the bump, usually best to pick up by tail and place hand under bump, then place into head end in viv, letting then go in by then selves, this also helps then push it all the way down, |

Thank you so much. As with any interest, so much information can be confusing. Im looking forward to getting a prarie king early next year and I am trying to take my time in setting up and preparation, however it is getting frustrating now, ha. Ive got a three foot by 1 foot by 2 foot tank with sliding glass lid. I am going to make my own background and get everything ready slowly. I keep fish and have a dog. I had two ferrets who sadly died 2 years back. Always wanted a snake and now Im doing it. Excited like a kid.
Thank you again for helping me clear things up. |

The longest my royal went off his food was around two-three months. What I did with Jasper when he first refused was to offer food again the following week on feeding day and if he refused again, I wouldn't offer again for a month unless he showed signs of being hungry, which for him was peeking out from under his log and looking at me, normally he was very shy and stayed under his log almost 24/7 You mentioned in another post offering live, I wouldn't recommend this because your royal has only been off her food for a short time and sometimes if you offer a snake live food it will eat it and then will turn its nose up at f/t because it wants to be fed live again. The longest I heard of a royal being off its food with no ill effects was almost two years. |

On the other hand, she seems lively and haven't lost weight. She shed last week in one piece, so she's not shwoing any signs of being ill, etc. On 28/02, it will be 3 months since she's last eaten. I'll keep trying every week, and see what happens. By the way, I NEVER EVER IN MY LIFE MENTIONED OR WOULD CONSIDER LIVE FEEDING, so probably you got this mixed up with someone else ![]() |

3 months is nothing for a Royal Dex, its only when they start to lose lots of weight that you need to start worrying... and live isn't that bad if it gets the Royal feeding again...
