just thought i'd add a treatment thats worked for me,
i had mites, which seemed to be resistent to everything, nothing was killing them of, prevent a mite, beaphar spray, regular soaking, bleaching the vivs, putting the vivs in below 0 tempretaures, boiling water in the vivs, and they kept surviving, so i was in tesco's and saw spot on, for dogs, so thought i'd try it i put a few drops on a sheet of newspaper wated for a few hrs until it was dry and put it in as the substrate, all the mites that left the snake were dieing almost as soon as they got of the snake, so i got an old little jam jar, filled it half way with water and put 2 drops of spot on in, mixed it together with the water, and dipped a cotton wool in, and rubbed the snake with it, avoiding the head and vent, after that i saw no mites, and within 1 treatment all were dead within a day. treatment was repeated a week later just to make sure, and there has been no mites since i have done that since. just thought i would tell people what worked for me |

i had a bad out break early in the year, haveing an large albino boa is easy to see even if you have the smallest speck of a mite on her.
i tried everything, over a time i tried every product from rep shops i could find, first was Provent a mite, this seemed to work for a time but they came back very quick, also as i had 15 vivs it did not last very long and did not spray very well seemed more of a dribble than a spray (maybe a dodgy batch) so after trying all the other products and failing, one day i noticed a few large mites walking on my albino girl, i removed these from her and placed on a small piece of kitchen roll, each one was placed into a sample vial. i then sprayed a small amont of each product into the vials. products tested were Mite Off, Four Paws Natures Reptile Protector and Beaphar Insect Spray. these were left for a couple of days, when came back all mites were alive except the one with the insect spray. conclusion: they all crap both direct on the snake and also direct on the mite!!!! except MAYBE Insect spray. problem i was left with is the insect spray is a 50ml bottle and is not cheap, could be good if you have one snake and one viv, i cleaned out a viv, washed it out and dissenfected it, sprayed albino and waited, even with this i never saw an end to the mites. only option left to me was Frontline, i had been avoiding this as was not sure about effect on my snakes it could have, i then washed out all vivs, while i was doing this i had my snakes all soaking in RUBs for about 3 hours, when vivs were ready i treated each snake with frontline. i applied very lightly and just a very small amount down the back. next was a very wierd thing, a few days later i saw my albino worse than ever, they were everywher, but now mainly on her face and eyes ![]() ![]() week later i repeated the procedure, but this time applied quite heavy....and as if by magic not seen a mite since....fingers crossed and staying that way!!!!so my advice to anyone after a looooong problem is save your money and time with the crap products in the shops and go straight to frontline. i did not dilute with water, i sprayed direct on a towel until the towel was quite wet with it, then i rubbed it all over snake (EXCEPT head and vent) i rubbed it up and down the body to get it under the scales as best i could. the snake was quite sticky from this when finnished, they were then placed back into a super clean viv, i also sealed with bathroom sealant any cracks and holes in viv and chucked out ALL wooden items, no water was given to snake for 72 hours, all have eaten and are fine since treatment. have to say i was very worried after this large dose given, this stuff is very strong and really stinks. i still would advise to treat with small amounts and never spray direct on snake, if you follow my heavy treatment then you are doing this at your and your snakes own risk, however i feel it is completely safe. thanks and sorry for the long story, if ya got this far, well done ![]() ![]() Last edited by ndixon7868; 25-05-2008 at 10:24 AM.. |

Hi
Our Boa had mites when we bought her a few years ago, i bought frontline and diluted it with water, sprayed her lightly and cleaned viv out with it. Worked a treat! As far as the pet shop goes, this is poor customer service and more importantly animal cruelty. The owner is aware of the problem as other customers have mentioned it, and he continues to supply contaminated products, knowlingly infecting other reptiles, sound like an offence to me! Steer clear of him, tell every other reptile owner you can so people steer clear and report this ejit to the RSPCA. Cheers The JPster's wife
