We just picked up an albino jungle with a slight mite problem, I sprayed along all the corners of the viv with Beaphar Insect Spray (0.02% ivermectin) and sprayed her last night. My OH just phoned (as I go to work before the lights come on) to say that she is 'crawling' in mites... this may be an exageration (she didn't look bad at all yesterday), will see for myself later - does anyone know how effective the Beaphar spray is?
I was already in quarantine mode, she is in a 3ft x 2ft x 2ft wooden viv (built it myself), lino glued down as flooring, only got a ceramic tile under the basking spot, a water bowl and a large exo hide in there. Considering I sprayed and wiped the ivermectin spray along all the corners (i.e up the sides, along the bottom edge, etc) and sprayed the snake itself, should this be enough? I might bath and oil her tonight, just in case, will give the viv a vacuum, reptile disinfectant and a little more insect spray too.

I don't know if anyone has suggested it ...there's like 25+ pages ..forgive my laziness I didn't read them all..but what I found to be the "silver bullet " for mites is rubbing alcohol. Harmless to them ..use it to wipe them down cage..everything...kills eggs and mites instantly..snakes get pissed because it irritates but as long as they don't drink a portion they'll be just fine..Used it 100x when I did wholesaling and large boids...never had 1 prob..don't use on a shedding snake. that could be a prob.

Hi everybody. I've been using Dried Beech Chips for years and not a problem. After checking up with the shop the dried ones are the only ones that are heat treated which in effect steralises them, and they are dry too so no spring tails or other damp loving critters

best thing ive found is stick the snake in the bath, then clean out the viv and spray with dettol everywhere. Once that is done let it dry, then take the snake out the bath, dry it off, then coat it in olive oil.
Place the snake back in the viv with just a water bowl and the temp as normal. The mites that haven't drowned in the bath will suffocate in the oil and it will make the snake go in to shed. The end result, a happy snake and happy owner with no mites. I tried this because although frontline is a good option (too expensive for me), olive oil is cheaper and more natural.

In the first post Ardap is mentioned, is it generic stuff or specifically for snakes as all I can find is universal/poultry stuff like this: 750ml ARDAP MITE AND LICE PEST CONTROL POULTRY COOPS on eBay (end time 19-Nov-09 21:33:28 GMT)
I know it can't be used on the reps themselves but I'm after something to treat a snake rack and this stuff supposedly works for up to 6 weeks which sounds ideal.
