I have only just got in to snakes and on Saturday 30th June I got two corn snakes. They are now 4 weeks old and last night I noticed a small black thing running round its head. I tried to get hold of it but I am still a little nervous of snakes. (Hence the fact I got babies not adults!). Could this be a mite? It was only on the male corn and tonight there is 2 small black things which I haven't noticed before just under the "chin". If these are mite which would you suggest for their age and would I treat both of them as they have always been together although I can not see any on the female.
Sorry if I sound thick but you don't know if you don't ask. My other half has had corn snakes before but never had mites on them and the book I bought doesn't show any pics.

Don't worry about replying to my last post. I have decided they have to be mites as there is another one so I am taking no chances and have today got some Mite Off and treated them all even though they are all seperate. Where the heck do they get them from, makes me itch just thinking of them!! I am assuming it comes from the wood.

This might be of some use to some people frontline online...
Just bought some myself and came within a few days. Normally your not allowed to buy frontline over 100ml without a prescription but this stuff looks like it comes from France so they get around it... Anyway for people who do you it remember it has to be seriously diluted before using it on a snake ! I thought it was handy to use though when cleaning out the viv, just make sure its all aired before introducing the snake back in !

Ok now I am fed up. I got rid of the mites my little snakes had with Mite Off. It worked lovely. My question is "Where the hell do they come from?" I have got some more. I am assuming they come from the wood as all my little snakes were all treated same as the houses and everything in it. Wood was changed etc as described in above posts. If it is the wood can I use anything else as a substrate? My little snakes are corns by the way.

When you use frontline spray it onto a damp cloth and holding the snake in the cloth let it crawl through, as frontline is only a contact mite killer on reptiles. On mammales it gets into the blood system and kills the mites through the blood sucking. Reptile skin does not allow this to happen as there is no conection to the blood iin reptile skin.
I prefer the hyoeraspis mits method myself. If you use the mites method simply spray the vivs daily(not heavily) and let the maties doe their thing. My snake house was cleared totally with one aplication. With other methods they just kept coming back. I have not had mites since. They come in on new snakes, the small mites that you get in the forest bark di not attack snakes just look unsightly. Anyone using forest bark ts best to poly bag it and dampen it down then nuke it in a microwave 3-5 miins. Ok thanks for that. I re-treated all the snakes and their houses etc. I have now had them on newspaper for about 3 weeks. So far no mites. I am now using another kind of wood substrate which I can not remember the name of and that should eliminate any chances of getting any more of the little blighters. So far so good!!!
