only ever had mites the once about a year ago. got some frontline from the vet, sprayed onto a cloth undiluted and allowed the snake to slither through the cloth a few times, making sure it was kept away from the eyes and mouth. completely cleaned the viv out and frontlined it too, then thoroghly washed it out. havent had a problem since.
its worth remembering if its not already been said that bark/log decorations often harbour mites and are difficult to clean as they are so absorbant. i then replaced all the decoration with that flexible artificial branch stuff and plastic hides. much easier to keep clean too

I might be being a total idiot here, but are you guys talking about the same Frontline that you use on cats and dogs for fleas?

Another question - what's the best way to disinfect bark hides? The ones I have are way too big to fit into a microwave.

good thread mate but you missed out frontline very good stuff. I have found my self having to scrape out the eye sockets to get at the mites as well, doing that has saved me a lot of problems and not every one should do this unless you know what you are doing.

I thought about using frontline directly on the snake but i decided against it just in case and got provent a mite instead which i just used on the vents inside and out and around the top of the rub worked a treat and hangs around for about 6 weeks so breaks the life cycle.

The new beaphar insect spray is the best thing i have ever used personally tried everything to get it of my royal and this did the trick almost instantly. But theres also household things that can be used I mean i used warm water, Lemon juice and a small squirt of antibactirial handwash for my iggy he's never had them since!

Not sure if this has been posted (had a quick check and don't think so) but here is a site that has some very good info on the hypoaspis mite...
