Out of curiosity, Caveman... have you ever measured the actual surface temperature of the mat you're using, right on the mat, then on the floor of the cage, then on the substrate above the mat?

I did exactly this with one of my mats recently, using an infrared thermometer:

ALL heat mats should be on stats.

All those saying they are not neccessary, Just think how hot the viv would have been in the recent heat wave if the heat mat is blasting out even more unregulated heat.

A stat on the other hand would, of course, have turned them off.

they are experienced reptile keepers and have never had any problems with heatmatt burns, so i guess i dont think they need one.

none ever got higher than the basking tempretures.

i can see how they could help.
any chance of translating this for me please.....seriously

If I say the words "thermal blocking" do you know what that means?

For that matter, if I say "your snake burrows, and may wind up on the glass right on top of the mat with no substrate between him and the glass" are you willing to accept this could be true?

if you don't use a stat with any heat source....mats including....you are putting your snake at risk....that simple really
and who the hell gave you that information about not needing a stat?
