Out of curiosity, Caveman... have you ever measured the actual surface temperature of the mat you're using, right on the mat, then on the floor of the cage, then on the substrate above the mat?
I did exactly this with one of my mats recently, using an infrared thermometer: Reptile Forums UK - Ssthisto's Album: Think you don't need a thermostat?

if you don't use a stat with any heat source....mats including....you are putting your snake at risk....that simple really
and who the hell gave you that information about not needing a stat? paul |
